This is the project from the last couple of weeks. I did two versions of the same subject, a tuna boat approaching a pier just before dawn.

This is more warmup than anything, since it’s been a couple of months since I did any real painting (as opposed to sketching, or finishing acrylic on canvas paper. View of Heidelberg Old Town from the Schloss. I think it looks a bit like I’m standing in the remains of Sleeping Beauty’s castle, where the briers still haven’t given up.

This one’s still in progress; the canyon walls and the stream are still unfinished and I’m not consistent about where the sunlight is coming from. But it’s coming along nicely.

I’ve been forgetting to post my progress. Here’s the one I’ve been working on for the last two weeks. I’m not sure whether it’s finished or not.
End of March wrapup

The first part of the year has been less productive than I had hoped, mainly due to serious family drama (middle son and wife splitting up) which really hasn’t taken that much time since they’re in California and we’re in New England. But there’s been a lot of time in conversation, and a lot of time lost to just pondering.
Possibly as a result of having so many churning emotions that are hard to articulate, I put a lot of emphasis on my art classes. I’m quite pleased with the progress I’ve made there.
Got one shiny new idea and worked on it for March Madness. Will keep poking at it and the teenage vampires story; hopefully one of them will be ready to go for November, if I decide to NaNo it.
I’ve made it about halfway through the Crows draft. I’m working on it for Camp NaNoWriMo this month, with the goal of having a solid though not polished manuscript by the end of the month.
May will be primarily a reading-and-crocheting month, with a scaled back Story-A-Day.
As usual, forgot to post last week’s art class (March 10)

Yeah, the night before this week’s class, I finally remember :p
I still can’t get the car right, and the perspective on the shack is off, too. May need some more work on that before I start the big painting.

I did another study for the big project, this time focusing on the sunrise. Came up with this, which I’m fairly pleased with:
I’m going to play around some with the band of green and mountains behind the guardrail; I think it probably needs to be darker relative to the green in the foreground.

We missed two weeks of art while we were in California visiting Steven and his family. I guess the break was good for my head because I realized the next step for me is to think on a bigger scale. Gulp. The very idea of a big painting, even if it’s the same sort of subjects I’ve been doing, is intimidating.
So this is the study I did last week for the big painting I want to do next. It’s the coffee shack near my mom’s house, from my last visit in September.

This one isn’t quite complete–still a lot of fine detail, especially on the bluejay–but I thought I’d post it anyway.

I wish I could think of witty titles for my posts. But I can’t, so I’ll just go for concise.
We started art class again last Thursday — the same all-day class we were taking last year. It’s been so long since I did anything other than pencil sketches that getting back into the acrylics was a little odd. On the one hand it was familiar and comforting. On the other hand, it was unfamiliar and I couldn’t remember the colors I wanted or the way to mix and apply them.
Here’s the picture I’m working on. I decided to work from the instructor’s still life setup instead of my own ideas, to give me more of a framework to get back into the flow. It’s far from finished.
