If anybody’s into New Adult fiction (fiction for and about characters in their late teens and early twenties), check out the new blog at NA Alley. They’re celebrating the start by giving away books, blog graphics, and critiques — go check it out!
I’m excited to see New Adult finally gaining its niche. I hope that means Overamped can find a home there. Joey and his friends are getting lonely just sitting on my hard drive.
I’ve known for a while that a lot of my stories tend to border between YA and adult fiction, but always felt that it fit neither precisely. The characters are more YA but the conflicts and encounters tend more toward adult. So maybe this is what I’m writing. I’ll definitely check out the blog. Thanks!
It’s not surprising that fiction should be moving this direction. Our current society is structured in a way that leaves young people in a kind of limbo for years — too old to be considered children, but not really considered full adults either.
I like the sound of new adult fiction. Sounds like a stronger contender to split up YA into mid teens, and New Adult, which could really help readers decide where to look. When I took a YA literature course, we discussed how huge YA is as a genre, officially spanning ages 12 to 21. That’s an awfully wide group to have to market to.
It could even be divided into thirds, I think. High school age, college age, new job/life age.
